Will a Massage Hurt?

One of the most common concerns people have before a massage—especially their first—is whether it will hurt. The short answer is: massage should not be unbearably painful. While certain techniques may create some temporary tenderness or pressure, your massage should always remain within a level that feels comfortable and manageable for you.

What Should a Massage Feel Like?

The sensation you experience will depend on the type of massage you receive, the amount of pressure used, and the condition of your muscles.

A relaxation or Swedish massage typically uses lighter to moderate pressure and should feel soothing and comfortable.

Deep tissue, sports massage, and trigger point work may involve firmer pressure to address areas of muscle tension, stiffness, or restriction. These techniques can sometimes create a feeling of tenderness or what some clients describe as a “good hurt,” but the pressure should never feel sharp, overwhelming, or intolerable.

More pressure does not necessarily mean a better massage. Effective massage therapy is about using the appropriate techniques and pressure for your body and your goals.

Communication Is Important

Everyone experiences pressure differently, which is why communication with your massage therapist is essential. If an area feels too sensitive or the pressure becomes uncomfortable, let your therapist know. They can adjust the pressure, technique, or positioning at any time. Your therapist may also check in with you throughout the session, particularly when working on areas that are tight or tender. You should always feel comfortable speaking up about what feels good and what does not.

Can You Feel Sore After a Massage?

Mild soreness can occasionally occur after deeper or more targeted massage work, especially if your muscles were particularly tight. This tenderness is generally temporary and should improve within a day or two. However, significant pain, sharp pain, numbness, or discomfort that continues or worsens after your massage is not something you should simply “push through.” Let your massage therapist know about any injuries, medical conditions, sensitive areas, or recent procedures before your session so your treatment can be appropriately adjusted.

Massage Should Be Customized to You

There is no single pressure level that is right for everyone. Whether you prefer gentle relaxation or more focused therapeutic work, your massage should be tailored to your comfort level, needs, and goals. A massage may occasionally feel intense when working through areas of tension, but it should never feel like something you have to endure. The goal is to help your body relax, reduce tension, improve mobility, and leave you feeling better—not worse.
